Why a list beats a text reply

It's not about manners — it's about who's listening: a reply in one chat reaches one person, but ten people are giving you gifts.

«I could use some headphones» in a chat with one friend never reaches the other nine. So two people give headphones, a third gives «something for the house», and a fourth asks your mum. A list on one link reads the same to everyone, at the same time.

The key part is the «I'll get this» mark. A guest sees it's taken and picks something else. You never see the marks at all — not «taken», not by whom. The surprise stays a surprise, and no two identical mugs.

How to write a birthday wish list

A list works not because it exists, but because there's something to choose from.

   Five items at different prices. A book for $10 and headphones for $150 on the same list is normal — guests have different budgets.

   Be specific. Model, size, colour, author. When people write their own lists, roughly one item in three names a brand or model. «Wine» gets guessed wrong, «pinot noir» doesn't. See what that looks like for different hobbies in wish list ideas.

   Where to buy it. A link or a shop next to an item removes the «would this even fit?» question.

   Not just objects. An experience, a course, a membership, a trip. Real lists ask for these just as often as things.

   Two weeks out, not the night before. The gift still needs to be chosen and ordered.

A party with guests

You add what's missing: cake, drinks, ice, candles. A guest takes an open item or adds their own, and everyone sees who's bringing what. An item can be addressed to a specific guest — they'll see the request and reply.

Put the address, time and dress code in the description: two hundred characters is enough that nobody has to ask twice in the chat. Set an expected headcount and you'll see who still hasn't checked in.

A child's birthday

A kid's party has two differences: a parent runs the list, and the link goes into the class, nursery or family chat.

The rules stay the same: specific items with size and age, «where to buy», guest marks with no names. Grandparents especially need a list like this — they ask first and give the most generously. Put size and age right in the item: «trainers, size 2» gets given without a call to check.
